ABOUT THIS REGION  WILDLIFE WATCHING

Wildlife watching trip to view a caribou migration

Every year one of the world's greatest wildlife spectacles occurs in Canada's far north - the migrations of the barrenground caribou herds. This wildlife watching tour offers you a chance to be a part of this amazing caribou migration event. Over two million caribou move from their calving grounds on the remote mainland tundra to the wintering grounds near the tree line. The largest, most phyically remote and least humanized of the five major herds is the Beverly Herd. Your guides will take you to view this herd, 420,000 strong, as they migrate south. With the southbound migration of this herd, you will have the opportunity to see lots and lots or caribou every day. Your basecamp is often established on historical water crossings and it is not uncommon to wake up in the morning and find caribou walking through and grazing right in the camp yard.

Close-up meetings with musk-oxen herds are also a sure thing on this remote and incredibly scenic sand-esker tundra. During the brief arctic autumn the slopes of the eskers become a blinding riot of colour as the first frosts change the local foilage bright red and yellow. When the sky is clear and the night is cool you are in for another treat, the dancing lights of the aurorea borealis. Swirling colours of green, red and pink often cover the sky from horizon to horizon. This trip is perfect for anyone looking to rediscover true wilderness.
