Brook trout fishing on Fortress Lake in the Canadian Rocky Mountains

Book this trip with us and receive a $100 per person discount on any of the tours!

Enjoy a combination of spectacular mountain scenery, remote location and world class brook trout fishing at this lodge on Fortress Lake the Canadian Rocky Mountains. Fortress Lake is a jewel in the Rockies, surrounded by 4 major icefields with glaciers and mountain peaks of unparalleled beauty. This lake is tucked away in a stunning, remote valley of the Canadian Rockies, dominated by towering peaks and glaciers.  The lake is the perfect location for a true Rocky Mountain lake fishing experience.

Fortress Lake is approximately 7 miles long and a 1/2 mile wide and is teeming with wild stocks of trophy Eastern Brook Trout. Fortress Lake and the nearby rivers were originally stocked in the 1930's and since then the Brookies have been reproducing naturally.  Most fish range from 2-7 lbs and average 2.5 lbs and they can be caught by either fly or spin casting.  The lake record is 11 3/4 pounds. While these are not terribly long trout, most in the 17 to 24 inch range, they grow in the shape of footballs, are very heavy, and use their weight to put on a great fight. Brookies are the only fish found here.

The fishing is consistently good throughout the summer.  Early June and October are the best months for clearwater fishing.  During July and August, the water becomes silty due to glacial runoff but the fishing remains good and weather is at its best.

The retreat provides an opportunity for the whole family to vacation together in a beautiful, secluded location.  The varied activities available ensure that there is something for everyone to enjoy and participate in. Guests can access the lake by power boat, kayak, canoe or float tube. There are easy hikes up gentle valleys filled with wildflowers and rigorous hikes to the higher alpine routes. Wildlife in the area include moose, bear, wolves, mountain goats, bald eagles and Canada geese.

All cabins are furnished with solar lights and wood stoves for a little extra warmth during those cooler spring or autumn nights. The cabins are literally surrounded by spectacular, towering mountain peaks and glaciers. There is a separate dining/lounge building and a separate shower house/washroom facility building.

MEALS & DINING

MEALS & DINING

All meals, snacks and non-alcoholic beverages are included. The quality and quantity of the food coupled with Rocky Mountain ambience ensures that meals rank among our strongest features. The retreat serves without the pretense of 5 star restaurants but deliver meals that rival their quality and enjoyment. The menu includes gourmet flair and flavor with traditional roots.

Breakfast includes omelets, homemade pancakes with a variety of berries, real maple syrup; an egg dish - like frittatas or quiche; fresh muffins still hot from the oven; yogurt; fresh fruit; and homemade jams. Bacon, ham, or sausages are generally served with each breakfast.

Lunch can either be an in or out experience, depending on the weather and your desire. Hot lunches see bbq hamburgers and others served with cold beer for those looking for that perfect outdoors lunch at the retreat. On poor weather days, we will prepare hot meals of soup, chili, or stews with fresh rolls, beer breads, or biscuits. For those wishing to fish, hike, or paddle all day, they offer packed lunches.

Dinners are a favorite time as the chef works the bbq and prepare salads and vegetables to match the meal. Tenderloins (beef, pork, and chicken), ribs, and other menus of similar quality are served. Enjoy your favorite items while relaxing with a beverage of your choice. There is a complimentary glass of wine with supper.
