Enjoy a combination of spectacular mountain scenery, remote location and world class brook trout fishing at this lodge on Fortress Lake the Canadian Rocky Mountains. Fortress Lake is a jewel in the Rockies, surrounded by 4 major icefields with glaciers and mountain peaks of unparalleled beauty. This lake is tucked away in a stunning, remote valley of the Canadian Rockies, dominated by towering peaks and glaciers. The lake is the perfect location for a true Rocky Mountain lake fishing experience.
Fortress Lake is approximately 7 miles long and a 1/2 mile wide and is teeming with wild stocks of trophy Eastern Brook Trout. Fortress Lake and the nearby rivers were originally stocked in the 1930's and since then the Brookies have been reproducing naturally. Most fish range from 2-7 lbs and average 2.5 lbs and they can be caught by either fly or spin casting. The lake record is 11 3/4 pounds. While these are not terribly long trout, most in the 17 to 24 inch range, they grow in the shape of footballs, are very heavy, and use their weight to put on a great fight. Brookies are the only fish found here.
The fishing is consistently good throughout the summer. Early June and October are the best months for clearwater fishing. During July and August, the water becomes silty due to glacial runoff but the fishing remains good and weather is at its best.
The retreat provides an opportunity for the whole family to vacation together in a beautiful, secluded location. The varied activities available ensure that there is something for everyone to enjoy and participate in. Guests can access the lake by power boat, kayak, canoe or float tube. There are easy hikes up gentle valleys filled with wildflowers and rigorous hikes to the higher alpine routes. Wildlife in the area include moose, bear, wolves, mountain goats, bald eagles and Canada geese.
