Paddle the scenic Athabasca River in northern Alberta on this self-guided canoeing adventure. For the wilderness paddling enthusiast looking to explore the area on their own, your hosts offer an unguided do-it-yourself canoe trip that is designed to let you enjoy the peace, tranquility and the natural beauty of the majestic Athabasca River, ending at their backcountry lodge near the Grand Rapids. There are no roads or bridges, or traffic noise, or fences. Only 200 kilometers of untouched wilderness waiting ahead for you. From the crystal calm, to the roaring song of the Grand Rapids; every bend of the river offers its own beauty, in an ever changing landscape of wildlife and vegetation.
Along the route there are also a number of historical sites that dot the banks of the river; remnants of days gone by, when the mighty Athabasca was a major trade route for First Nations people, and later for trappers, settlers, gold miners and explorers alike. Many of these ruins and artifacts still remain for those who wish to discover. After your canoe journey is complete, you will take out at a backcountry wilderness lodge and enjoy some time relaxing and exploring the area before your hosts transport you back to your put-in location by jet boat.
