Winter ski and snowboard touring from a fly-in lodge in the Canadian Rocky Mountains

Get away from the crowds at this fly-in wliderness lodge in the Rocky Mountains. In winter this lodge offers back-country ski and snowboard touring. Explore the deep powder of the remote peaks and valleys surrounding the lodge. There is a huge variety of terrain from incredible tree skiing up to high alpine, steep to gentle, long to short, fall line to varied,  and aspects in all directions. We ski and snowboard in an elevation range between 2,520 meters (8,391 ft) at the highest point and 1,640 meters (5,461 ft) at the lowest point – a total elevation range of 880 meters (2,930 ft).

Although weather & snow quality can never be guaranteed, one of the important reasons to chose this area was its snow. First, we are located northerly, which gives us cooler temperatures. Second, we are uniquely located at the convergence of warm & moist Pacific air moving easterly towards us & cold air masses that hover over the iconic Columbia Icefields glaciers array that is just to the south of us, and this convergence creates the snow we all desire. Given those unique characteristics, in prior years when other lodge locations have been impacted by El Niño, we have had great skiing all season.

ACCOMMODATIONS

This lodge is a classic Canadian log lodge that began construction in the summer 2013. The lodge was partially pre-built off site, then flown by helicopter to our very remote Mallard Peaks area of the Rocky Mountains, where the building was completed.

The main floor of the lodge features a living and dining room, with wood fired stove, and kitchen . The second floor has sleeping bays along the outside walls, divided by interior walls. The beds (one upper & lower in each bay) are custom made oversize twins for lots of space,  each fronted by individual black out privacy curtains, and each with a solar light. The second floor also has a separate room for changing, with a counter and sink for wash up etc. & a mountain shower (full sized stall and curtain, hot water container and overhead nozzle) draining into our greywater system.

The lodge uses solar power for most electricity needs. You can charge your cameras and computers. Wi-fi internet connection is available. The lodge has a satellite phone (cost per minute applies).

Comfortable toilet facilities are located a short distance from the lodge in a separate heated and well-lit log building. The toilet is just like at home, except that after being used the toilet incinerates waste instead of flushing it.
