Cross country skiing expeditions on Baffin Island in arctic Canada

Explore the north end of Baffin Island on these arctic cross country skiing adventures.

Auyuittuq Ski Traverse
Auyuittuq has some of the most beautiful alpine scenery on earth. This ski touring expedition crosses the Akshayuk Pass. Starting at North Pangnitung we’ll ascend the Owl Valley. Between Glacier and Summit Lakes the magical cylindrical tower of Mount Asgard draws us onward. Then we descend the Weasel valley. Mount Thor, 1500 metres above us, is said to have the longest uninterrupted cliff face in the world. We cross the Arctic circle before our final destination at Overlord, a majestic peak overlooking frozen Cumberland Sound. This is a diverse and challenging expedition for a reasonably fit and adventurous participant.

Arctic “Big Wall’ Ski Tour
One of the most unique skiing expeditions anywhere. The route will include some of the most
dramatic scenery anywhere on the planet. The “big wall” region is near the Inuit hamlet of
Clyde River on Baffin's east coast. Known by some as the "Yosemite of the North", it has also
drawn comparisons to the Trango Towers in Pakistan. Sheer granite rock walls, some over three
thousand feet high, guard the entrances to magical deep fiords. The route will take the team
close enough to even touch these Arctic giants. Under constant daylight, every day will bring
new terrain, adventures and challenges. This truly is one of the wildest, most remote and
spectacular regions of Baffin Island. Skill Level 3.

WEATHER

Baffin Island is classified as having a Polar Tundra Climate. In the 24 hour darkness of mid winter the average day time low is a punishing -33°C. By late April there is light more than half the day and things have warmed up considerably. Expect the day time high to average something like -8°C (18°F) with night time lows of perhaps -16°C (3°F). The record highs and lows range from +11°C (52°F) to -31°C (-24°F) during the dates of the expedition. Winds can make it feel colder. The average wind speed is 13 km/h usually from the NW. The air is quite dry.  With the gradual warming in the spring the snowfall increases. The snowiest time of year is during our expedition with an average of 18 cm of new snow for the month. Expect snowfall one out of 3 or 4 days. The average accumulated snow depth on the ground is about 60 cm. There is bright sun about half of the daylight hours during this time of year.
