Mountain River canoeing expedition in the Northwest Territories

Paddle the scenic Mountain River on this whitewater adventure in northern Canada. The Mountain River is your 'guide's choice' as the best wilderness canoeing river in Canada. This wild whitewater river flows 370 km, dropping over 1,200 metres over its course, with large volume rapids, fast current and five beautiful canyons. Our float plane lands at the headwaters lake, surrounded by craggy mountains.

These reach heights of over 2,700 metres, dominating the background with rock colours of buff, grey, cinnamon, green and maroon. Starting in a creek scarcely wide enough to float our canoes, we wind through miles of uninhabited country. Tributary streams add volume, and we'll have fun in class 1 - 3 rapids. The river flows in constant meanders, cutting its way through the sandstone and shale.

The current is furious and we will cover large distances with easy paddling. The numerous rapids can change drastically due to the often rising and falling water levels. With a spray cover on our canoe, we should be able to run them all. Campsites are on gravel bars or alluvial fans, and offer easy access for us to hike in the surrounding canyons and hills. You'll want to keep your cameras handy in case you catch sight of caribou, moose, wolves, Dall's sheep, grizzly or black bear. The Mountain is perfect for the intermediate paddler keen to explore the ultimate wilderness river.

GUIDE INFORMATION

5:1 guide ratio. Your guides are exceptionally qualified. Each principal guide has an extensive outdoor background, formal training and leadership experience. On this expedition there will be an assistant guide. The guides are always ready to provide coaching and helpful advice on any aspect of the trip and will attempt to maximize the spirit of adventure for each individual. Your safety is their prime concern and your guide will make decisions with
this in mind.

RESTRICTIONS

This trip is suitable for the paddler with solid whitewater skills and some previous experience on a river canoe trip. The Mountain River is a large volume river with a strong continuous current with many rolling waves and sections of shallow gravel rapids. In the canyons there may be large standing waves with more complex patterns. The river is susceptible to sudden dramatic changes in water level making the difficulty of the canyons unpredictable. This is not a river for the novice.

You should be comfortable with basic strokes and maneuvers such as eddy turns, front and back ferries, and braces. You should have some river reading skills as there will be long sections of rapids that cannot be scouted. You should understand basic safety and rescue techniques. We highly recommend a whitewater clinic or trip as a pre-trip warm up. You should be of at least average fitness for your age so you can enjoy the paddling and side hikes.

At the campsite everyone pitches in with setting up tents, collecting firewood, preparing meals, telling stories etc. The guides coordinate things and are always ready to assist you in any tasks. They will provide expert coaching and lots of personal attention.
