Itinerary

Introduction

The morning is spent paddling around a stunningly beautiful and serene fjord, which serves as a wonderful contrast to the imposing mountains that surround it. The fjord is teeming with wildlife, and we usually see Arctic Terns, Eider Ducks, Cormorants, and Black Guillemots along with a friendly and curious seal colony.

Then after a quick lunch break, we will put on our helmets and hit the forest trail, replete with stunning views over the water, which is framed by snow-carpeted mountain peaks.

The tour is flexible, and the mountain biking section can be edited according to ability, with our friendly guides always on hand to help you with anything that you need. Thus, if the group is very confident, we can take on some steeper trails, while if they are less so, we will stick to the easier, more traditional paths.

Our Icelandic take on the biathlon begins from our base at Bræðraborg Café, where you will meet your friendly tour guide and get all the equipment that you need for the kayaking. Then, once everyone is ready, we will make the short walk through the picturesque village of Neðstikaupstaður, down to the fjord. Then, after a brief safety talk from our kayaking expert, we will embark on our kayaking adventure.

solo kayaking in Westfjords

Kayaking on a fjord is a truly unique experience, combining fun physical exertion, with the serene icy blue waters of a submerged glacial valley. The fjord is surrounded by imposing moss-covered mountains, providing a spectacular backdrop to the peaceful waters. We will spend around two hours exploring this tranquil paradise, searching for seals and a variety of fascinating bird species, as our kayaks glide across the still waters.

Then, once we have returned to shore, we will have a quick lunch in the village, before heading out for the second part of our adventure. Once the ride leaves the village, we will begin to climb towards the mountains, passing the avalanche barrier, and riding behind the imposing walls that prevent debris from crashing down the mountains.

We will continue to skirt around the base of the mountain, moving along the meandering track, which takes us towards the Tungudalur forest. Hidden within this dense forest is the majestic Buna river, which flows across the rugged terrain eventually ending in the equally beautiful Buna Waterfall. We will pause for a minute at this chaotic place, where multiple streams of water cascade down the luscious green hillside. Our final stop will be on the other side of the final avalanche barrier, when after a short, steep climb, we will be rewarded by a panoramic view of the entire fjord, an inspiring sight, which is the perfect way to end our biking adventure. From there we will take a leisurely downhill cycle back to town.
