  • Silfra Fissure
  • Snorkel between two continents
  • Thingvellir national park
  • Geysir Hot Spring area & Gullfoss waterfall (optional)

The continental rift in the historic Thingvellir National Park is the only place in the world where you can swim between two continents. The snorkeling experience in Silfra was voted as a top-five experience by Trip Advisor’s 2019 Travelers’ Choice.

From the surface, it appears as a small section of Thingvallavatn Lake. But when you put your mask on, the crystal-clear water reveals a subaquatic paradise. More than 100-meter visibility, ancient rocks covered in algae, and the clearest water on Earth make this snorkeling experience beyond amazing.

Upgrade your day tour snorkeling at Silfra with a Golden Circle tour. Take the famous sightseeing route on the same day and visit Gullfoss waterfall and stunning geysers at Geysir hot spring area!

About the Silfra Fissure

The Silfra Fissure, a rift between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates, is nothing like the snorkeling locations that you’ve seen before. Plunge into the underwater world of one of the top snorkeling and diving destinations in the world.

It’s hard to name one specific feature that makes Silfra special because it’s simply a natural wonder in every sense.

You’ll float above the rift between two continental tectonic plates.

You can see at least 328 feet (100 meters) into the deep.

There’s the unbelievably clear water, the rugged walls of bare rock, the bright seaweed and the bottomless canyon below.

Upgrade your day at Silfra with a visit to the famous Golden Circle. Extend your trip for a couple of hours to visit the unmissable Gullfoss Waterfall and Geysir Hot Spring. See the rest of Thingvellir National Park, a place of history and incredible beauty.

Whether you’re a pro or a beginner, with the help of our expert guides your snorkeling in Silfra will be an amazing experience!

Silfra is located in the heart of the historic Thingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The fissure opened after a strong earthquake in 1789. The North American and Eurasian tectonic plates continue to move apart farther apart at a rate of about 0.79 in (2 cm) every year.

To get to Silfra for your snorkeling trip, you can choose to be picked up from your selected location in Reykjavik. You may also choose to meet us on-location at Thingvellir, where our friendly guides will be waiting for you.

The best part is that you don’t need any certification or previous snorkeling experience. The only requirements are that you’re healthy, adventurous, and able to swim!

Once you’re at Silfra, you’ll be given all the necessary equipment and put on your drysuit. You’ll swim in the “lazy current,” a stream of glacial water that flows slowly in the fissure. The pure glacial water filling the rift has been filtered by lava rock for decades, so feel free to take a sip while you’re there!

Marvel at the contrast between the deep blue water shades with the lime green and orange seaweed along with the dark brown rocks. You’ll discover spectacular rock formations as you glide through the four sections of Silfra:

  • Silfra Big Crack is the narrowest section 394-ft (120 m) long, where the tectonic plates are extremely close to each other.
  • Silfra Hall is 26-ft (8 m) wide and 46-ft (14 m) deep, with more light and massive rocks on the bottom.
  • Silfra Cathedral is 328-ft (100 m) long and 75-ft (23 m) deep, where swimming feels like flying.
  • Silfra Lagoon is the 16-ft (5 m) deep section with the best visibility and bright green algae.

When you finish snorkeling, you’ll be welcomed at the surface with cocoa and cookies to warm you up as you enjoy the panorama of Thingvellir. One more reason to add this experience to your bucket list!

If you want to discover Iceland above and below, then upgrade your snorkel package with a Golden Circle add-on. The Golden Circle sightseeing route is a combination of Iceland’s most famous sites: Thingvellir, Geysir, and Gullfoss.

Our first stop will be Thingvellir National Park, just a 40-minute drive away from Reykjavik. This is Iceland’s oldest national park, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its cultural value. Besides the fact that the world’s first parliament was founded on these grounds, the geology is a sight to behold. During each season, the landscapes of Thingvellir offer breathtaking views of Iceland's natural beauty.

After Thingvellir, we’ll move on to witness the geothermal show at the Geysir hot spring area. Alongside the dormant Great Geysir, Strokkur Geyser spouts scalding water every 8-10 minutes. Every eruption takes your breath away as the water sways and bubbles seconds before bursting high into the air!

We’ll round off the Golden Circle tour with a visit to an attraction that you can hear long before you see it. Gullfoss Waterfall, or “The Golden Waterfall,” is a massive, two-tiered cascade where the glacial meltwater thunders down over a 32-meter drop. Inhale the crisp freshwater mist as you stand steps away from the majestic torrent.

Once we complete the Golden Circle part of the tour, we’ll set out to plunge into the magnificent Silfra Fissure. You’ll be greeted by a professional guide and, after getting into the drysuit, you’ll begin your adventure into the blue. A perfect end to a perfect day!

Well worth the wait

I'd been wanting to dive silfra from the day I learned, but after 10 months away from home, diving wasn't exactly in our budget, however snorkelling with Arctic Adventures was above and beyond my expectations, I couldn't have hoped fir a better experience. Equipment provided was top notch, and our guide was a legend. Would 100% recommend

Silfra snorkeling experience

I took my girlfriend to snorkel Silfra for her birthday and it was AMAZING. Coldo was the name of our guide and his energy was infectious, he made the tour have a sense of family about it and he was very passionate about his work. Highly recommend Arctic Adventures and Coldo as a guide if you are lucky enough to get him. Enjoy Iceland!

Koldo was the BEST guide!!

We LOVED our experience at the Silfra fissure snorkel adventure. I almost wasn't able to go because of claustrophobia with the dry suit. My guide was so patient and talked me through it so I was able to enjoy the experience. It was even more beautiful in person than in the pictures. Even though the water is just above freezing, I did not feel too cold (and I am from Florida!). Overall it was an AMAZING experience that I absolutely recommend.

FAQ

Still got questions about the tour? Hopefully you will find the answer here.

No, you don’t need any prior snorkeling experience. However, you’re required to know how to swim and be comfortable in the water in order to snorkel in Silfra.

Yes, you should be able to swim independently and feel comfortable in the water. However, you don’t have to be a strong swimmer to enjoy snorkeling in Silfra. If you know the basics, you’re good to go!

Yes, the requirements are as follows:

  • Must be at least 12 years old
  • Participants under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or an adult guardian booked on the same tour
  • Height limit is 4 ft, 11 in (150 cm) to 6 ft, 7 in (200 cm)
  • Weight limit is 99 lb (45 kg) to 265 lb (120 kg)
  • If you don't fall within these parameters, we won't be able to provide you with suitable equipment
  • Snorkeling involves a moderate level of exercise, you must be reasonably fit
  • If you’re pregnant, you will not be allowed to participate due to the small risk of cold water entering the suit
  • It’s important that you can both understand and communicate in English in order to participate in the tour
  • All participants are required to read over our snorkeling handbook prior to going on the tour
  • The snorkeling handbook includes important information regarding medical conditions that are not allowed in Silfra, etc.

We recommend wearing a thin thermal base layer and warm socks. Materials like wool, fleece, or synthetics work best. The main goal is to wear something that will keep you warm. Cotton is not recommended.

We provide you with two layers of clothing: a thermal undersuit and a neoprene dry suit. We also provide you with a mask, a snorkel, fins, a wetsuit hood, and wetsuit gloves.

We use top-notch dry suits made by Waterproof or 0´Three, we’ll do our best to find the best fit for you. There is still a small chance that some water can enter your dry suit. Don’t worry, it's not dangerous but it will feel a little cold.

Just to be safe, we recommend bringing a change of clothes and a towel. While you’re snorkeling, your face, hair, and hands will get wet, but that’s normal and shouldn’t make you too cold.

Typically, we spend about 30-45 minutes snorkeling in the Silfra Fissure. After we finish our route, you can choose to either get out of the water or swim around a bit longer and explore the Silfra Lagoon.
