Part of the charm of the Aurora Borealis in Iceland is its elusiveness and one of the main parts of our tour is the thrill of the chase. The aurora forecast changes daily, so we can’t tell you exactly where we will go. But if luck is with us, before long, we’ll spy the dancing colors of the Northern Lights above one of Iceland’s iconic attractions such as - Þingvellir, Reykjanes or Kirkjufell. The Northern Lights have enchanted sky gazers for millennia and almost every culture that has ever witnessed them has considered them to be of divine origin. They can appear dramatically or subtly spraying vivid colors across the dark sky. Flickering patterns then begin to emerge as the swirling colors create surreal shapes that will leave you breathless.
We now know that the dancing lights are a result of charged particles from the sun hitting Earth’s magnetic field. Green and yellow auroras are the most common, but we also see blue, violet and rose auroras. Red auroras are the least common, however, they happen more in Iceland than anywhere else in the world. Whatever color we see – the Northern Lights are nature’s most unrivaled light show and they never fails to astonish!
