The 5 Best Ice Caves in Iceland
Strap on your crampons and visit the best ice caves in Iceland at the heart of our massive glaciers. This winter, make unforgettable memories on an ice caving adventure.
Ready to take the plunge? No, you’re not about to dive the Silfra Fissure. You’re finally going to propose to the love of your life! Maybe you’ve bought the ring and you’re waiting for the right moment. But when? Where? How?
We’ve seen it in the movies and in our hometown fancy dinner places — the get-on-one-knee-in-the-middle-of-the-restaurant move is overused and, frankly, a bit outdated.
Nowadays, big romantic gestures are all the rage. You’ve seen videos of these huge proposals, with massive flower arrangements, expensive fireworks, or elaborate surprises, all done in front of tons of people.
Maybe there’s an alternative. Maybe there’s a place that’s grand, romantic, and still leaves space for you and your significant other to just be together?
A place like this does exist. It’s called Iceland. Just imagine, your honeymoon and every anniversary will be the perfect excuse to come back to Iceland!
Free of prying eyes and over-involved family members, Iceland is a beautiful place to start a life together. Below are a few of our (mostly single) staff’s Iceland proposal ideas. Maybe they’ll work for you?
A lifetime commitment can be scary, even when you know you’re making the right decision.
Take some courage from Iceland’s glaciers. They have been standing tall for thousands of years, never changing course, just slowly and methodically heading in the same direction they always have.
Hiking one of these stoic charmers is an unforgettable experience. Add on a glacier peak proposal (and maybe a hidden bottle of champagne) and the moment will go down in your other half’s mental history book.
Head out on an adventure with your better half on our Golden Circle, Snowmobiling and Northern Lights tour. Hop on a snowmobile and begin your journey together on a glacier in search of the sparkling Northern Lights!
What is a ring but a Golden Circle?
Might sound a bit macabre, but I'd love to have a tour around places that have weird love-related legends about them (like Rauðisandur). Just travel through those places with my other half and tell those stories and then at the end of the holiday be like, "If that hasn't scared you off, marry me." And also, say that while standing at a historic murder scene or something. Just for that little extra spark. Might not be everyone's cup of tea, but if my other half proposed to me like that, at least I'd know they know me well enough and they're ready to spend the rest of their life with me!

But many people are starting to forgo the expensive ring and overpriced wedding. Instead, they choose to take trips and invest their money in an experience rather than a hunk of metal or an open-bar.
If you do decide against a diamond (which I don’t advise), why not stop at a beach full of them? More precious than an old rock, the Diamond Beach is dotted with hundreds of crystal clear ice “diamonds” that have washed onto the exotic black sand.
These diamonds aren’t forever but they’ll have your honey melting. Join us on our 2 day South Coast tour where we visit the Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, a popular proposal spot for a reason.
This tried-and-true place will help any proposal sparkle.
My dream proposal in Iceland? Go whale watching in Dalvik, and the whale comes out of the water holding a ring in his mouth. If some issues appear with training the whale, Diamond Beach is Plan B. Sunset, calm waves, and shining ice. Preferably, the ring should shine a little brighter. #don'ttellmyboyfriend

While we may not want people around when we finally jump, that doesn’t mean we don’t want people to see it.
Proposing is a major life event and you definitely want to share it.
Going to great lengths for the perfect proposal picture is nothing new. In Iceland, great lengths and amazing scenery are everywhere you look! The small Arctic country is the perfect backdrop for a photo you’ll look back on for the rest of your lives.
More opportunities to take your shot than should be necessary, our six-day Ring Road trip from Reykjavik will give you plenty of chances to score the perfect proposal — and the perfect proposal picture!
All you need to take care of is an Iceland proposal photographer. Or simply give us a shout and we’ll get everything sorted for you!
Don’t forget to remove the lens cap!
“I would take the lady on a very fancy pub crawl to only the expensive places, let us get very hungry (and a little tipsy). On the late-night walk home, we'd stop at Bæjarins Beztu for some dogs, once her face is covered in ketchup (which always happens) I would pass her the ring with some napkins.”

Sweep your better half off their feet on a Thorsmork volcano hike in the Highlands that weaves in and out of glaciers and lava caves and has plenty of fun ups and downs. Not far from Reykjavik, the hike is a great way to get out of the city for fresh air and a fresh start.
Remember, it doesn’t have to make sense as long as it works.
I got proposed to on the top of a volcano, with a view over two other volcanoes on a sunny, windless September morning, on my birthday, in the Westman Islands. Then, we got married in a lighthouse on Reykjanes. For me, it was more than just a dream.

Hiking the Laugavegur Trail/Thorsmork, every single part of that place would be a good place for a proposal. It would be a bit of waiting for the right moment. But a hike after dinner, a bottle of bubbly and two glasses or mugs in the backpack. Dress code: long johns and Icelandic wool sweaters. Or the true Icelandic way… "So we have a few kids and have been living together for 20 years, maybe we should get married? What do you think?”
