Travel along the outer edge of southeast Iceland by Super Jeep, driving across black sand beaches and tracing a rugged coastal route shaped by the elements. Along the way, you’ll pass early aviation ruins, a narrow harbor entrance often watched by seals, and continue inland to a glacier lagoon, accompanied by an expert local guide throughout the journey.
This tour takes you along a remote stretch of southeast Iceland, linking black sand beaches, coastal landmarks, and glacier-fed terrain.
You’ll start the day by meeting your guide at the Super Jeep base camp near Hotel Smyrlabjörg. From here, you’ll drive across the Suðurfjörur black sand beach toward the remains of the region’s first local Hornafjörður airport, a quiet reminder of early aviation in a remote landscape. Nearby, Hvanneyjarviti lighthouse stands exposed to the elements, marking the edge between land and sea.
The route continues to the narrow entrance of Höfn harbor, considered one of the most challenging approaches along Iceland’s coast. Seals are often spotted resting near the water, keeping a close eye on passing vehicles while mountain ridgelines frame the horizon.
From the coast, you’ll travel inland to a glacier lagoon beneath Fláajökull or Heinabergsjökull. Fed by meltwater from surrounding icefields, the lagoon shifts with the seasons and conditions. Reindeer are frequently seen in the area as well. After the tour, your guide will take you back to the Super Jeep base camp.
The meeting point is at the operator's base camp, which is located just by Hotel Smyrlabjörg, 46 km (28.5 mi) west from the town of Höfn and 34 km (21 mi) east from Jökulsárlón.
