Our day begins at our base at Mávagarður C (the grey building), where our friendly guide will provide us with any gear that we need and give us any relevant safety information.
We’ll then make the scenic drive to the plateau of Breiðadals and Botnsheiði, where our adventure begins. We’ll be welcomed by a gorgeous view over the Súgandafjörður Fjord and then start the short descent towards its shores.
We’ll ride near to the coastline for a while and then begin to make our weaving ascent to the summit of the mountain ridge – where we’ll be rewarded by majestic views over the Westfjords. We’ll take a pause in this magnificent setting and enjoy a traditional Icelandic picnic with one of the best views in the land of fire and ice. We’ll then start to ride downhill into the Syðridalur Valley – renowned for the many birds that it hosts, including bar-tailed godwits, eiders, black-headed gulls, and meadow pipits. The trail is pretty smooth, allowing us to pick up some speed and enjoy some adrenaline-pumping fun.
We’ll make a stop by the hydro-power station that dominated the valley – creating a sustainable future for Icelanders of the future. From there we’ll start to head home, passing a peaceful lake, before we take the old road of Óshlíð – renowned for the craggy cliffs that overshadow it and its sublime views over the deep blue sea. By then we’ll almost be back at Ísafjörður after a 6-hour biking adventure filled with heart-pumping fun and awesome beauty.
