This immersive day trip takes you deep into volcanic landscapes, past roaring waterfalls and erupting geysers, and into soothing geothermal waters, all while uncovering the natural forces and history that have shaped the island. With seamless transport from Reykjavík and thoughtfully timed stops along the route, this journey lets you experience Iceland’s most iconic landscapes up close.
Your journey starts with a pick-up from your accommodation or an agreed meeting point in Reykjavík, which may take up to 30 minutes. Once you’re settled in, you’ll set off toward the magnificent Kerið volcanic crater, just an hour’s drive away. There, a striking bowl of vivid blue water lies cradled by steep, dramatic slopes. You’ll explore the crater up close, walking along its rim and taking in every corner. Each step reveals a fresh perspective on the surrounding landscape and the blue waters shimmering below.
Afterwards, you’ll press on to the Gullfoss waterfall, one of Iceland’s most powerful natural wonders. Fed by meltwater from Langjökull, Iceland’s second-largest glacier, the river Hvítá drops in two stages into a narrow volcanic canyon. At peak flow, thousands of tons of water thunder through the gorge every second, shaping the landscape below. Carefully placed paths and platforms allow you to explore the falls from multiple angles, revealing their immense scale and geological force throughout the year.
Next up on your journey—the Geysir Geothermal Area, where Iceland’s restless energy is impossible to ignore. This legendary landscape is home to Strokkur geyser, which erupts every few minutes, blasting boiling water high into the air with raw force. Take time to wander past hissing steam vents, mineral-stained earth, bubbling pools, and clear hot springs. All of it will reveal to you the powerful geothermal forces constantly shaping the island beneath your feet.
Finally, it’s time to take a well-deserved break. Unwind in the soothing warmth of the newly renovated Laugarvatn Fontana geothermal baths, beautifully set on the shores of Lake Laugarvatn. Let the natural steam baths rejuvenate your body while you soak in outdoor pools heated by Iceland’s geothermal energy. Surrounded by serene landscapes and fresh lake air, this tranquil retreat is the perfect blend of relaxation, wellness, and authentic Icelandic bathing culture.
The final stop is Þingvellir National Park, a site of both geological and historical significance. Here, visitors can walk through the rift valley where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates meet. Þingvellir is also known as the original meeting place of Iceland’s parliament, founded more than a thousand years ago. You’ll walk around and take in views of lakes, lava formations, and open plains. After the visit, return transport to Reykjavík follows.
