Uncover the Kerlingarfjöll mountain range in Iceland’s central Highlands and experience a quiet side of the country far beyond the usual stops. This guided day hike from Reykjavík takes you through steaming geothermal valleys, past ice-capped rhyolite peaks, and along glacier-fed rivers.

Pick-up in Reykjavík starts at around 8:00 a.m. On the drive toward the Highlands, there is a stop at Gullfoss (around 10:15–10:30 a.m.) to meet guests joining there. Once everyone is together, the route continues to the vivid Kerlingarfjöll mountain range in central Iceland—an area shaped by steaming geothermal valleys and glacier-fed rivers. The drive itself is part of the experience, with wide lava fields and glacier-topped mountains along the way.
Your group will then reach the dramatic Hveradalir valley, one of Iceland’s largest and most active geothermal areas. Often called the “Valley of the Hot Springs,” Hveradalir is filled with bubbling mud pools, steaming vents, and brightly colored hot springs. Rust-colored rhyolite mountains frame the scene, and early summer often brings a striking contrast between the terrain and lingering snow. From the car park, the hike heads down into the valley, with around two hours to explore the surreal landscape on an easy trail.
Reykjavík pick-up starts at 8:00 a.m. Pick-up is from the selected location chosen during booking.
Gullfoss pick-up is around 10:15–10:30 a.m. at the Gullfoss Café. The group joins the bus coming from Reykjavík and continues to Kerlingarfjöll together.
After the tour, drop-off is at the same location as pick-up.
Since Kerlingarfjöll sits in Iceland’s remote Highlands, the weather can change quickly—even in summer. Typical temperatures range from 2°C to 20°C (35.6°F–68°F), and snow on the trails is possible, including occasional snowfall in mid-July. Tour duration, trail choice, and total hiking time may change depending on weather, trail, and road conditions.
