"Into the glacier" - World's Largest Ice Tunnel

The adventure kicks off as we depart from Reykjavik and make our way to Langjokull Glacier. The first stop is Deildatunguhver. This is Europe’s most powerful hot spring, gushing out about 180 l (48 gal) of boiling water per second! Don’t forget to look for a rare type of fern, Blechnum Spicant, that only grows here. 

We will also visit a local horse farm on our way, where you will learn more about the world-famous Icelandic horses. 

The next stop is Hraunfossar waterfall (Lava Falls). The cascade is home to thousands of rivulets that seep through the lava rocks of Hallmundarhraun lava field. Then witness Barnafossar waterfall, found just a few hundred meters from Hraunfossar. Your guide will tell you the spooky story surrounding the falls. 

After lunch at a café in the vibrant town of Húsafell, we move on to Langjökull glacier. Hop on a former NATO missile truck and drive close to the top of the glacier where the ice cave resides. Inside the cave, touch ice that’s been forming for hundreds of years. Explore a LED-lit tunnel that leads to different caves, including a frozen chapel for underground weddings. 

After about an hour inside the glacier, exit the cave with memories to last a lifetime. 

Our adventure comes to an end when we return to Reykjavik at approximately 6:30 PM (18:30). 

Meet us at the Húsafell Center, where your guide will be waiting for you. Then board a modified glacier vehicle for the ride across Langjökull glacier and up to its peak. Sprawling over 368 mi2 (953km2), the glacier is Iceland’s (and Europe’s) second-largest ice cap. From its peak, you’ll get a chance to gaze across this endless snowy landscape. 

Then enter the winding ice tunnel that leads to the ice cave called “Into the Glacier.” Your expert guide will lead the way and tell you about the lives of glaciers. The glacial cave is stuffed with natural ice formations including deep moulins, multi-colored ice layers, sharp crevasses, and labyrinths. 

Seeing and touching the centuries-old snow that has turned to ice is an experience like none other. 

You’ll spend about an hour exploring Langjökull glacier ice cave.

You can meet us at Husafell Center all year round an hour before departure. During summer (between 1st of June and 15th of October) you can also meet us at Klaki Basecamp which is located closer to the glacier. Please note that the road leading to Klaki is a gravel road, so a 4x4 vehicle is highly recommended. Detailed driving instructions will be available on your ticket upon booking.

• When driving from Reykjavik to Húsafell, take Route 1 north to Borgarnes. Then take Route 50 and continue driving until Route 50 changes to Route 518, which will take you to the Húsafell Center.

• The actual view of an ice cave may look different from pictures since ice caves are a natural phenomenon and are constantly changing. How they look may vary depending on the season, time of the day, lighting, and other factors.
