Itinerary

Introduction

You’ll visit the remote Cape Ingolfshofdi where the first Viking settlers landed, see cute puffins in the flesh and enjoy stunning views of Vatnajökull, Europe’s largest glacier. So, get ready for the adventure of a lifetime in the land of fire and ice!

Your friendly local guide will meet you at 10:00 am in the Ingolfshofdi Parking lot. The puffins generally live on the coast, so we’ll hop on a traditional hay cart and drive straight there. Along the way we’ll cross rolling meadows, beaches dotted with sand dunes and icy glacial streams.

Our destination will be Cape Ingolfshofdi – where the original Viking settlers wintered in 874 AD. The winters in Ingolfshofdi are harsh and one can only imagine the trials and tribulations that these early settlers must have gone through. However, in the summer the area transforms into a luscious nature reserve that teems with birdlife.

The most famous of these is the adorable Atlantic puffin, whose smiling faces and cute appearance have made them popular with bird lovers around the world. Fortunately, Ingolfshofdi is a protected area, meaning that the puffins don’t scare very easily, and we can get really close to them. There may even be a cute chick, or two wandering around, so be prepared for some incredible photo opportunities!

The passionate local guide will make sure that you see all the other birds that live in the area, such as the great skua or pirate of the sea. While also telling you about the incredible lives that puffins live. If you want an educational tour or simply love seeing wildlife in the flesh, then this tour is the one for you!

The puffin sightseeing tour will finish around 12:30, giving you around an hour-and-a-half before you need to be at the Skaftafell Parking Lot for your glacier hiking adventure. You’ll meet your friendly guide at 14:20 to get kitted out and make the short drive to where the glacier hike begins.

Our destination will be Falljökull (the falling glacier), located to the south of Vatnajökull. Its summit will reward us with stunning panoramic views over Vatnajökull, its many outlet glaciers, the vast Atlantic Ocean, and Hvannadalshnúkur – Iceland’s tallest peak. Stepping onto a glacier is an awe-inspiring experience. You’ll instantly feel its awesome energy as it shifts beneath your feet – creaking and moving like some kind of living ice giant. This constant motion has created a spellbinding landscape that is populated by twisting crevasses and deep moulins. You’ll also see a variety of different ice sculptures, such as frozen ice falls whose cascading

beauty is as spectacular as it is poignant. Glacial peaks and the vast Atlantic Ocean sprawl on the horizon, creating awesome photo opportunities Your friendly glacier guide will be with you every step of the way – ensuring that you’re always safe and taking you to the places with the best views. You’ll also be able to see the way that glaciers have helped to craft Iceland’s unique landscape and learn about how their future is threatened by human actions. This easy 3.5-hour hiking tour is the best way to explore these natural wonders!
