Information

Welcome to the ultimate South Coast tour--a perfect introduction to the best of Iceland’s waterfalls, black sand beaches and glaciers. We’ll marvel at the majestic glaciers that tower over horizons, visit iconic waterfalls and soak in black sand beaches with their basalt columns and sea stacks. It’s time to explore the magical Iceland of the sagas and folktales.

First, we’ll collect you from your designated pick-up point in Reykjavik and make the scenic drive eastwards, crossing the Hellisheiði pass on our way to Sólheimajökull glacier. We’ll pause for a photo near Sólheimajökull, a sprawling outlet glacier, which unfurls from the larger Mýrdalsjökull glacier. While we’re there, your passionate guide will tell you more about glaciers, how they’ve evolved over the ages, and their impact on Iceland’s one-of-a-kind landscape.

Our road continues on to Reynisfjara, an iconic black sand beach, where the blue waves of the Atlantic Ocean cultivate a beautiful contrast to the dark volcanic sands. Reynisfjara is also home to a world-famous series of basalt stacks, which rise up a nearby cliff and are Iceland’s equivalent of the Giant’s Causeway. Nearby are the dramatic Reynisdrangar sea stacks, which local folklore claims were once trolls, who were turned to stone by the coming of the dawn.

Our next destination is the charming town of Vík, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. We’ll climb the hill to see the lovely local church, which is a great place to snap a picture of the town and its spectacular surroundings.

From there, we’ll drive back to Reykjavik, stopping at the South Shore of Iceland’s two most famous waterfalls on our way home. The first, Skogafoss, is one of the largest in Iceland and plays a significant role in Icelandic history. Local legend tells of one Viking explorer who settled at Skógar and buried a chest of treasure beneath its roaring cascade – so keep your eyes peeled, you might get lucky!

The second waterfall, Seljalandsfoss, has a narrower cascade but is no less beautiful. It’s also one of the only waterfalls in Iceland that can be seen from both sides – so make sure that you bring a camera!

We’ll drop you back in Reykjavik at the end of your South Iceland tour – after a wonderful day filled with stunning attractions and with memories that will last a lifetime.

During summer, the pick up starts at 08:00 a.m. from authorized pick-up points in Reykjavík. During winter (November 1st - February 15th) the pick up starts at 9:00 a.m. due to limited daylight.

Please note, the pick-up process may last up to 30 minutes – we thank you for your patience in advance.

Check out our list of available pick-up points here.

Warm clothing is absolutely vital – we recommend bringing warm clothing, waterproof clothing, headwear, gloves and sturdy shoes.

Small Group Tour of the South

Reviewed 04/02/2019 by KW Fletcher

Our tour guide, Biggy/ie, is a native of Iceland. As such he was a font of information both during the tour and when I frequently returned to the bus early. He patiently answered all of my questions and we even talked about his US travels. I found learning about the culture and the people of Iceland every bit as interesting as the stops on our tour. He was particularly helpful giving us practical and safety advice at many of our stops. Biggy/ie clearly was frustrated with the drivers who have never driven in the snow and ice. I didn’t blame him at all! I would add to those drivers a few of the huge tour bus drivers who had no consideration for anyone else on the road. But I digress.... We couldn’t have been any happier with Biggy/ie and our tour with Arctic Adventures!

I'd do it again.

As a first time visitor to Iceland, I was very pleased with this Arctic Adventures day trip along the South coast. The van was comfortable with lots of windows for easy viewing of the landscape. The driver educated us about the local sites and kept us on schedule. However, his voice was not always clear or easy to understand, ... maybe the sound system could be improved. Thanks ! I will return.

Great Taster to the South

This was an incredible day, with an extremely knowledgeable guide. Two waterfalls, one glacier and a UNESCO world heritage black sand beach. Our guide in particular (sorry I forgot his name, but I remember he was Polish) couldn't do enough for us - he always went above and beyond. If I were to come to Iceland again, I will be hiring a car and heading south!

A great trip to explore Iceland's natural wonders

Yannis, our tour guide, was a wonderful tour guide. He gave information that I feel would be pertinent to further appreciate what Iceland has to offer with regards to the sites that we visited. I did not have information overload and for me, the way that the trip was planned worked out to maximize the daylight on a short winter day. I will do this trip gain with Arctic Adventures if I get the chance to go back to Iceland!

It was awesome

Dear Artic Adventure team, Hi! Both my friend and I had a wonderful time during our tours. Our tour guides were excellent and very knowledgeable. We had small group tours and it was the best. We got to the real deal of Iceland. We plan to come next year and bring our friends too. Will be sure to be taking tours with you. We are so lucky to have seen the northern lights since we took the super Jeep Northern Lights Tour. With Arctic Adventures, we went to places like never before.
