Landmannalaugar From Above

This spectacular tour will take you over a spectacular outlet glacier from Vatnajökull to the beautiful and tragic Lakagígar area. The vast volcanic crater was hewn into the earth by a 1783 eruption that was one of the largest in recorded history.

The fissure is a colossal 27 kilometers and is now decorated by rich green vegetation, however, it wasn’t always so beautiful and the famine that followed its creation caused a year-long famine that killed around a quarter of Iceland’s population. This makes Lakagígar ideal for people who want to gain an insight into the power and beauty of the volcanic forces that helped to craft our world.

From there, we will push on to the geothermal paradise of Landmannalaugar famed for its stunning rainbow-colored rhyolite mountains and bubbling hot spring valleys. We'll fly over young lava fields, steaming valleys, and spectacular curving rivers.
