Overview

Geothermal forces set Iceland apart from most other destinations. Why not experience this phenomenon for yourself? Have you ever tried to dive into tectonic fissures? Because underwater exploration by diving into tectonic fissures known for their geothermal activity is a must!

Highlights

  • SMALL-GROUP EXPERIENCE
  • UNDERWATER GEOTHERMAL ACTIVITY
  • TWO DIVING PLACES
  • DIVING IN VOLCANIC CLIMBING
  • OCEAN WATER AND FRESHWATER DIVING
  • SHIPWRECK AND OLD CRAB HATCHERY

Bjarnagjá and Kleifarvatn are the two dive sites you will explore on this day trip. Both offer interesting geothermal activities among other attractions. You too can dive in and among inverted waterfalls of bubbles rising from geothermal pockets below these fissures.

Air from below is forced through porous rock. Do not be startled or surprised if you feel slight vibrations coming from the surrounding rocks! It is completely safe and truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. As a bonus, Bjarnagjá is proud to have an abandoned shipwreck and an old crab hatchery. During this tour, you can take a look inside.

Itinerary

INFORMATION

  • We begin our adventure at Kleifarvatn, a brooding lake known for its intense geothermal activity. The first signs are impossible to miss as the smell of sulfur greets us from the shore. We get our gear ready and dive in to discover where it's coming from. All around you, small bubbles rise from the ground, forming upside-down waterfalls.

  • As we approach a crater located in the middle of the lake, you will feel strong vibrations. Do not be alarmed. The pressure building up under the bottom of the lake is the reason for this strange and rare event. This experience alone makes a swim in Kleifarvatn an unforgettable one.

  • Bjarnagjá is an 18-meter-deep lava canyon, a testimony to the tectonic activity in Iceland. You will experience it on your second dive. If you decide to dive there, you do not have to choose between freshwater and saltwater diving  you can do both! While most of the rift is filled with fresh groundwater, the ocean is only a few hundred feet away. Thus, the saltwater has a significant impact on the microclimate and helps to form a unique ecosystem.
A huge shipwreck lies quietly in this crevice. You will feel like you are on a real treasure hunt as you glide around it! Impressive underground caves and an ancient crab hatchery are two other attractions at Bjarnagjá.
