It will be in the company of a passionate local guide, who will take us to some hidden places off-the-beaten-track and tell us fascinating things about what we’re seeing.
The tour will begin in the Wilderness Center – an immersive museum that gives an authentic insight into how people used to live in Iceland. If you want to go on a trek, through untouched wilderness, then this is the ideal tour for you.
We’ll start the day with a guided tour of the Wilderness Center – a fascinating immersive museum that features exhibits from local artists filmmakers and historians that seeks to teach people about what life used to be like in Iceland’s untamed rural heartlands. We’ll then begin the hiking part of the tour – venturing out to the old abandoned farm at Kleif, to hear stories about the Icelandic farmers who used to live there.
The Jökulsá river is just behind the farm and we’ll winch ourselves across it using our traditional cableway – an adrenaline-inducing experience that gives us a bird’s eye view of its white-crested rapids. We’ll be walking along a section of the river that is rapidly descending from the highlands to the lowlands – dropping a total of 600 meters in just 30 kilometers. It does this via a series of 15 waterfalls, whose majestic cascades are unique and beautiful – making for a truly wonderful journey that will remain with you for the rest of your life.
The trail will then turn away from the river into a charming birchwood forest that is filled with many different kinds of flora and fauna. We’ll also keep an eye out for the diverse wildlife that inhabits the area, including – reindeers, birds and many, many more. We’ll soon be nearing the end of our 6-hour adventure as we approach the secluded remote Laugarfell Highland Hostel. There we’ll find a warm hot spring, where we can relax our muscles after a day of excitement in Iceland’s wild interior.
