Itinerary

Information

We start our adventure with a thrilling whale watching expedition. Find yourself in the open waters face-to-face with all sorts of marvelous marine life. Our expert guides will use their extensive experience to give you some inspiring, up-close encounters with incredible whales and dolphins.

Next, enjoy a fantastic white water rafting outing down the Hvíta River. En route, soak in the outstanding surrounding scenery. After the invigorating paddling experience, relax in a hot, restorative sauna — a perfect way to cap off your fun-filled adventure!

We'll pick you up from Reykjavik and head to the capital’s charming Old Harbor, where the salty smell of the sea intermingles with the occasional squeal of a seabird.  As our boat glides into the rippling waters of Faxaflói Bay, you’ll gasp at the imposing, soaring peaks in the distance. A few moments later, our meeting with the gentle giants begins!

Meet minke whales as they sheepishly approach our vessel and stick their heads out of the water to say “hello” or witness the decidedly unshy humpback whales leap out of the sea and land back in the water with a dramatic splash! You will never forget your first whale! Fin whales, sei whales, and killer whales (orcas) are occasionally spotted as well.

During the trip, keep an eye out for other aquatic mammals such as white-beaked dolphins who are incredibly fast swimmers (able to reach speeds of up to 25 mph (40 kph) and harbor porpoises, one of the smallest marine mammals. With luck, you’ll see these elusive creatures coming up for air with a noise that sounds like a sneeze. Along the way, be captivated by an extraordinary array of seabirds such as gannets, guillemots, cormorants, kittiwakes, Arctic terns, among others. We’ll also sail along several islands turned puffin colonies providing a great opportunity to snap some amazing pictures!

After our whale watching tour, hang on tight because up next is a heart-pounding raft ride through the rugged Gullfoss Canyon. We’ll head to our Drumbó Base Camp at Drumboddsstaðir, where our rafting trip on the Hvítá River takes off. The gushing river is one of Iceland’s best white water rafting destinations and features many adrenaline-inducing turns, dramatic twists, and churning rapids. The turquoise waters are fed by the Langjökull Glacier, Iceland’s second largest ice cap.

Raft for 4 mi (7 km) through the pristine canyon and billowing waves under the guidance of our expert guides. Be enchanted by the amazing landscapes flashing by along the shore as you rush down the glacial river. The river wanders through an ancient gorge where basalt cliffs tower high overhead. Along the way, we’ll stop to swim in the crystal-clear waters and you’ll get the chance to cliff jump into the river — if you’re up for it.

Afterward, relax in a hot sauna while reliving the rewarding experiences of the day. The adventure concludes in the evening when you’ll be dropped off back at your hotel in Reykjavik.

Pickup is at 8 a.m. from your hotel or nearby meeting point in Reykjavik. Please be aware, picking everyone up can take up to 30 minutes, your patience is greatly appreciated.

You can find available pickup points in Reykjavik on our information page.

Wearing the right clothing is key to having a comfortable rafting trip. We recommend avoiding cotton, as it holds moisture and absorbs body heat when it gets wet. Quick-drying synthetic fabrics such as nylon or fleece are ideal.
