Conquer Iceland's rugged Highlands in a thrilling Super Jeep expedition. Discover Herðubreiðarlindir springs, hike the mystical Askja Caldera, and peer into the turquoise waters of Viti Crater. This unforgettable day trip promises adventure and breathtaking sights at every turn.
Your unforgettable adventure begins at The Parking of Icelandair Hotel near Lake Myvatn. Hop aboard a powerful Super Jeep and journey deep into the wilderness of Iceland’s Highlands. Explore the breathtaking Askja Caldera, a volcanic masterpiece formed by ancient eruptions. Hike to the rim of Viti Crater, a vibrant turquoise lake nestled within the caldera. Finally, traverse the dramatic Holuhraun Lava Field, a raw reminder of Iceland's fiery past.
Our first stop is Herðubreiðarlindir, a fresh springwater oasis bordering the massive Ódáðahraun Lava Field. Here, you will enjoy a guided walk to the shelter of an infamous outlaw from 1775 or relax by the stream, soaking up the tranquility of the Icelandic Highlands.
Our main stop is Askja, the complex of nested calderas with otherworldly landscapes. The guide will choose the best time and peak weather conditions to explore Askja Caldera and take the 2.5-kilometer hike to Lake Víti. Depending on the weather, this breathtaking Askja trail is easy to moderate in difficulty, taking around 35 to 45 minutes to complete.
When you arrive at Víti, you will be amazed by its stunning beauty and calm atmosphere. You can take a refreshing swim in the blue geothermal waters of the lake (if it’s late summer) or walk around the crater rim, enjoying the surrounding views. Experience Askja at your own speed before returning to the Super Jeep to continue the captivating journey.
You will spend around 2.5-3.5 hours at Askja.

Don’t forget, it is an 11-13 hour trip into the Highlands’ wilderness. To ensure a smooth experience, pack plenty of food and water for the whole journey. We generally advise packing two meals as well as some snacks and enough water. There will be a picnic stop at Dreki Mountain Hut, but more is always better than less when it comes to sustenance!
If you prefer a hassle-free solution, you can choose a wholesome lunch prepared and packed by the local Hotel Laxa, which will simplify your planning.
