Lake Urriðavatn has always been a strange and beautiful place shrouded in myth and legend. Locals who lived around it noticed that certain parts of the lake did not freeze over during wintertime. Some even speculated that a monster lived in its depths, which melted or broke the ice. These days, we know that these ice-free patches (known as Vök) were caused by underwater hot springs beneath the lake. And that’s why we now have beautiful geothermal baths sitting on the lake!

The infusion bar at the Vök Baths offers a wide selection of foraged teas and herbal drinks made from the purified geothermal water of the lake. Visitors can also enjoy a delicious tisane that is made from the heated water of the lake and then allowed to cool. A refreshing tisane is included in the admission fee.
