Thorsmork is a nature reserve shielded by mountains and glaciers, it is a true raw nature paradise offering boundless opportunities for adventure on every level. This Icelandic mountain ridge was named after the Norse God Thor and it means Thor‘s Woodland in English.

Your tour begins when we pick you up in or around the Reykjavik area in the morning.

We drive along the south coast of Iceland and it is easy to stop to see some sights along the journey if you wish, for example, Seljalandsfoss, a very unusual waterfall which you can walk behind. Whilst driving our guides enjoy sharing their knowledge of the Icelandic Sagas, nature, and folktales ensuring our passengers always experience a memorable, entertaining, and informative tour.

Some of the activities we can undertake on the way are horse riding, exploring the hot springs in the vicinity of Hveragerdi, and taking of course hiking tours in Thorsmork.

Your tour will then continue towards the interior of Iceland as we travel to Thorsmork (meaning: Thor’s Woodland), a nature reserve which is shielded on three sides by mountains and glaciers, one of these glaciers is the infamous volcano Eyjafjallajokull.

The E15 (for shortening) caused enormous disruption to air travel across western and northern Europe in April 2010, as you may recall. The ash plume rose to a height of approximately 9 kilometers (30,000 ft) which rates the explosive power of the eruption as a 4 on the Volcanic Explosivity Index. Due to its location, Thorsmork offers some great views of this volcano, and the weather there is quite often surprisingly good.

The meltwater from the glaciers forms into rivers which is very exciting to drive across on our journey. Some days the crossings are quite challenging - but just relax! Our skilled drivers are very experienced in these conditions and will take you safely across the rivers. Before you even get to Thorsmork you will discover glaciers, caves, and beautiful mountain and woodland scenery.

Many tourists describe Thorsmork as a big, delicious cake for nature lovers – there are so many possibilities for hikes and such varied scenery.

There are many locations to explore a little further in and around Thorsmork, some good ideas include the mountains of Valahjukur and Utigonguhofdi, both provide excellent views. Exploring the canyon of Stakkholtgja is a great adventure and the song lava cave deep within the canyon is always charming. If you prefer you could simply relax and enjoy the peace of unspoiled nature in this beautiful place.

Fimmvorduhals, one of Iceland’s most popular hiking trails starts in Thorsmork. There are two new volcanoes, formed in 2010, called Magni & Modi (the two sons of Thor), located about 6 km from the starting point of the trail. This really is the perfect place to see how Iceland is still being constructed from the forces of raw nature.
