Fimmvorduhals Day Tour - Volcano Hiking | IS-AA-TVH

Eyjafjallajokull eruption area and Thorsmork nature reserve

About Tour

In the spring of 2010 a fresh eruption on the Fimmvorðuhals Ridge was like a short prelude to the main eruption in Eyjafjallajökull. We offer you an opportunity to visit the new craters (Magni and Modi) on a day trip from Reykjavik. Experience volcanoes, glaciers and roaring rivers. The hike is only for people in good shape.

  • Þórsmörk (Thorsmork valley)
  • Fimmvörðuháls (Fimmvorduhals volcano)
  • Eyjafjallajökull (Eyjafjallajokull volcano)
  • Seljalandsfoss waterfall
  • Small group experience
  • Super Jeep experience
  • Gígjökull glacier
  • Magni and Móði (Magni and Modi craters)

We will pick you up in Reykjavik in the morning and drive towards Thorsmork Mountain Ridge. We will be at N1 gas station in Hvolsvollur around 9:40 am for a short stop if you prefer to meet us there for the tour. Please note that the pick up can take up to 30 min. Our first stop is at the popular Seljalandsfoss Waterfall but after that, we head to Thorsmork on a rough gravel road crossing unbridged rivers on the way to the slopes of the mighty Eyjafjallajökull glacier.

Once we are deep in the valley of Þórsmörk where birch forests cling to oddly shaped palagonite formations we leave our car and start hiking.

The path winds upwards through majestic canyons, along narrow ridges aptly named Kattarhryggur (Cat's Spine). As we proceed higher the multiple gullys and canyons of Þórsmörk catch our attention.

We cross the narrow Heljarkambur (Hell's Ridge) before the pushing up the last hill before seeing the craters.

After a nice stop at the two craters formed during the eruption 2010 and named after two of Thor's sons, Magni and Móði we head back. The descent provides a fresh perspective, offering stunning views over the spectacular landscape of Þórsmörk. We will return to civilization having been touched by nature's awesome power and creative force.

We will drive into the sunset to Reykjavík stopping for some food on the way.

Mountain view of the Thorsmork valley

We’ll collect you at 8:00 from your designated Reykjavik collection point. From there we’ll make the scenic drive to Iceland’s famous South Coast and the mighty Seljalandsfoss waterfall, which will be our first stop of the day. Its cascade thunders 60 meters down, and has unique features where visitors can walk behind the stream!

We’ll get back on the road and pass Gígjökull glacier – which was dramatically affected by the notorious Eyjafjallajökull eruption of 2010, before we eventually reach Thórsmörk. We’ll depart the vehicle there and take in our incredible surroundings. Thórsmörk really is a one-of-a-kind destination, an oasis of green nestled between two mighty glaciers, with hot springs and glacier rivers. It was supposedly created by a single blow of Thor’s mighty hammer.

Thórsmörk leads to the famous Fimmvörðuháls Trail – a legendary hiking route that is part of the world-famous Laugavegur Trail. The ascent will show us glaciers, mountain ridges and volcanoes – the definition of the land of fire and ice.

We’ll pause at a wide plateau high above Thórsmörk rewarding us with stunning vistas over the Icelandic Highlands. The hike then continues towards two volcanic craters, known as Magni and Modi, which were creations of the infamous Eyjafjallajokull eruption. These are the best hikes in Thorsmork that you won’t want to miss!

The total elevation gain is around 700-800 meters and the Thorsmork hike will be around 16 kilometers in total. The popular trail from Thórsmörk to Fimmvorduhals is one of the best hikes in the world and is an absolute must for outdoor enthusiasts visiting Iceland. If you want to test yourself and challenge your limits, then this hike is perfect for you.

After the tour, we will drop you back at Reykjavik.

  • We recommend wearing warm clothing during the hike – sturdy hiking shoes and waterproof clothing are also essential.
  • If you don’t own any of these items, you can rent them during the booking process. Please note that this is impossible on the day of the hike.
  • The tour is available to all experience levels; however, we do recommend that you have a reasonable level of fitness – you will need to be able to walk up to 16 kilometers on sometimes uneven ground.
  • The weather in Iceland is unpredictable – please ensure that you are ready for all weather conditions.

The Views are Worth the Sweat

The Views from this hike (especially if you go down a different way than you came up) are unbelievable. The guide kept telling us - 'just wait....it gets better'. I didn't believe him….but every time we'd stop, he was right.....it was even better. Definitely a challenging hike that you need to be in shape, alert, and prepared for....but so so so incredibly wonderful!

Highlight of our trip!

This was my husband and I's first trip to Iceland, and we typically choose one guided tour experience in each country to be the highlight of our trip. We completed Ring Road and saw all the major things along the way. This hike through Thorsmork did not disappoint. Our tour guide was wonderful as well, and very knowledgable about Iceland as well (we like to pepper our guides with questions). The bus was very timely in picking us up and everything was very organized. We loved our smaller group size, as well as our super jeep experience! The scenery was stunning of course. This guided hike was worth every penny and most definitely was the highlight of our visit to Iceland!

Must do tour!!!

What an amazing experience! Our tour guide was so knowledgable and also a great leader. He let us walk at our own pace but ensured he could see us at all times. We couldn't complete the ascent due to the weather but our tour guide kept us informed all the way. I still had a great experience getting up to the plateau and seeing the lava flows from 2010. I'll be back to complete the ascent at another time!
