A day hike at Thorsmork valley. If you are looking for a great hike with stunning landscape then this is the tour for you!
We will start the day by meeting you at the Hvolsvöllur and driving towards Thorsmork Mountain Ridge.
Once we are deep in the valley of Þórsmörk where birch forests cling to oddly shaped palagonite formations we leave our car and start hiking.
The path winds upwards through majestic canyons, along narrow ridges surrounded by Mýrdalsjökull, Tindfjallajökull, and Eyjafjallajökull. As we proceed higher the multiple gullies and canyons of Þórsmörk catch our attention.
We also stop off at some beautiful sceneries along the way into/out of Þórsmörk, including Gígjökull, an Eyjafjallajökull outlet glacier from where a major glacial flood grandly cascaded during the 2010 eruption. The descent provides a fresh perspective, offering stunning views over the spectacular landscape of Þórsmörk. We will return to civilization having been touched by nature's awesome power and creative force.

The meeting point for this tour is the Midgard Basecamp located in Hvolsvöllur.
We will collect you at 10:00 AM and get on the road bypassing Gígjökull glacier – which was dramatically affected by the notorious Eyjafjallajökull eruption of 2010 before we eventually reach Thórsmörk. We’ll depart the vehicle and take in our incredible surroundings. Thórsmörk really is a one-of-a-kind destination, an oasis of green nestled between two mighty glaciers, with hot springs and glacier rivers. It was supposedly created by a single blow of Thor’s mighty hammer.
The ascent at Thórsmörk will show us glaciers, mountain ridges, and volcanoes – the definition of the land of fire and ice.
We’ll pause at a wide plateau high above Thórsmörk rewarding us with stunning vistas over the Icelandic Highlands. These are the best views in Thorsmork that you don't want to miss!
The total elevation gain is around 700-800 meters and the Thorsmork hike will be around 8-10 kilometers in total (approximately 3-4 hours). The path is uneven at times and the route takes you uphill and downhill, so if you want to test yourself, then this hike is perfect for you.
After the tour, we will drop you at the meeting point in Hvolsvöllur.
We recommend wearing warm clothing during the hike – sturdy hiking shoes and waterproof clothing are also essential. If you don’t own any of these items, you can rent them during the booking process. Please note that this is impossible on the day of...)
The tour is available to all experience levels; however, we do recommend that you have a reasonable level of fitness – you will need to be able to walk up to 10 kilometers on sometimes uneven ground. The weather in Iceland is unpredictable – please ...)
