Itinerary

The tour will start bright and early when we will collect you at your selected pickup location in Reykjavik.

We then head out of the city and travel out to Raufarhólshellir Lava Tube. We wander into the dark depths of the Raufarhólshellir lava cave, which was carved by volcanic activity over 5,200 years ago.

Lava tubes form when molten lava suddenly cools beneath the surface of the earth: forming a cylindrical tube, and they often contain amazing geology. Raufarhólshellir lava tube cave is one of the finest examples of such structures, with its colorful walls and polished rock formations.

If you visit during the winter, it will be filled with ice sculptures and icicles. As we traverse the cave: crawling, climbing, clambering and walking through its alien geology: you will gain a new perspective on how volcanic activity has carved our world. Getting to know and understand the power of nature so hands-on is an amazing way to get the most out of your magical Icelandic adventure.

A big group riding horses in Iceland

After the caving tour, we will take the scenic drive to the Riding Center, where you will catch your first glimpse of Icelandic horses: they are smaller and stockier than traditional horses, which allow them to deal with the colder temperatures better. Then after one of our friendly guides gives you a quick safety briefing we will get out onto the Icelandic trail, delighting in all the treats which await us.

We will trot through the lava fields surrounding the Mt. Helgafell volcano: now inactive, but famous for a 1973 eruption. Continue on through the luscious volcanic hillsides towards the old Kaldarsel sheep corral all the time surrounded by stunning natural beauty, unique geology, and incredible scenery as far as the eye can see. In the distance you will see the Bláfjöll Mountains (Blue Mountains), imperiously grazing the skyline. Our friendly experts always take safe paths through the mountains, making this horse ride perfect for both beginners and experts. So cross the serene Icelandic countryside and gaze in awe at the natural wonders it has to offer.

Pick-up is around 8:15 am (Oct-May) or 7:45 am (June-Sept) from your hotel or a nearby meeting point in Reykjavík. Picking everyone up can take up to 30 minutes. Your patience is much appreciated.

Weight limit: Maximum weight for a rider is 110kg/242lb.

FAQ

Yes, we will provide you with a headlight and a helmet.

The Icelandic weather is very unpredictable therefore we highly recommend to dress in layers. Warm layers closest to you preferably wool/thermal underwear, pants sweater and on top waterproof outdoor clothing. It is also suitable to wear good hiking shoes and gloves. Jeans have proven to be a bad choice.
