Itinerary

This is an amazing combination of two separate tours: a 3-hour whale watching tour and a 3-hours lava tube caving tour.

Raufarhólshellir Lava Tube reveals the hidden mysteries of our island's recent geological history. In the afternoon, you join a whale watching tour from the Reykjavik marina.

People Watching Rock Formations Raufarholshellir

We will enter through narrow cave entrances and find they open out to reveal an extraordinary scene of lava formations and unexpected colors. You will see natural stalactites and different rock formations making this an experience of majestic and almost indescribable beauty.

We recommend you wear good walking shoes or hiking boots which are suitable for walking on uneven lava surfaces.

We'll be using torches and not headlights. There are a few reasons for that, mainly because headlights are weaker than torches and it is difficult to point them in the correct direction.

At around 4500 ft (1360 m) long, Raufarhólshellir Lava Tube formed during the Leitahraun eruption, nearly 5,200 years ago!

Raufarhólshellir lava tube is considered to be a subterranean wonderworld. The cave awards a visit with spectacular insight into Iceland's underground lava and magma chambers.

Husavik Whale Watching with a boat

We drive you to the Reykjavik marina where you will have about half an hour between tours. You'll be able to buy something to eat in the whale watching boat if you have forgotten your lunch pack.

The Whale Watching tour departs at 13:00. You'll receive detailed information about it on your voucher.

The whales we most commonly spot include minke whales, white-beaked dolphins, harbor porpoises, and even the majestic humpback whales. A wide variety of seabirds can also be observed on this tour. You will need to be ready to train your camera on gannets, guillemots, cormorants, gulls, kittiwakes, arctic terns, and the thousands of colorful puffins that dot the nearby islands during the puffin season.

The guides use their experience to help you to know where to look to locate the wildlife, describe what is seen, and use their scientific knowledge to answer your questions. The crew will make sure that any birders on board will not miss the birds we encounter!

The boats have spacious and finely decorated public areas with huge windows and a café providing refreshments for your convenience. The extra larger viewing deck boasts a fantastic panoramic view and is a great place from which to capture the fantastic scenery around. Experience this photographer's delight for yourself!

Your captain welcomes any curious passenger who wishes to visit the wheelhouse and will explain how all the equipment works.

FAQ

Yes, we will provide you with a headlight and a helmet.

The Icelandic weather is very unpredictable therefore we highly recommend to dress in layers. Warm layers closest to you preferably wool/thermal underwear, pants sweater and on top waterproof outdoor clothing. It is also suitable to wear good hiking shoes and gloves. Jeans have proven to be a bad choice.
