Explore Iceland's breathtaking Kerið Crater, formed over 6-7 thousand years ago during a volcanic eruption. With vibrant blue waters and steep walls, it's a stunning stop on your trip.
Kerið is a beautiful volcanic crater with a lake in South Iceland. It was formed about 6,000 years ago and is known for its striking colors. The crater walls are red from iron deposits, and the lake is a bright blue-green.
The crater is approximately 55 m deep (180 ft), 170 m wide (560 ft), and 270 m across (890 ft)!
Visitors can walk around the top of the crater for great views or take a path down to the water and walk around the lake. Unlike many craters that are made by explosions, Kerid was formed when a magma chamber collapsed, giving it a unique shape.
It's part of the popular Golden Circle route, making it an easy and favorite stop for tourists.
Kerið Crater is conveniently located just off the Ring Road, a short drive from Þingvellir National Park and Reykjavík. Situated 15 km north of Selfoss along Highway 35, it's a quick detour from the Golden Circle route.
Whether you're driving from the Blue Lagoon, venturing down to the South Coast, or exploring the Golden Circle, it's an easy stop. Plus, there's free parking right next to the crater for convenient access.
