kootenay river aerial view

The Kootenay or Kootenai River is a natural wonderland that originates in the Rocky Mountains, meanders through Kootenay National Park, and finally finds its way to the Columbia River at Castlegar. Blessed with scenic surroundings, rushing rapids, and excellent camping opportunities, it’s a paddler’s paradise.

As picturesque as it is exciting, the river offers a wide variety of rapids and is perfect for beginners and experts alike. We’ll hop on SOAP inflatable canoes, which will safely take us through an eye-opening coastal landscape of soaring peaks.

We’ll traverse the most captivating section of the river, between McLeod Meadows to Canal Flats, home to an abundance of spectacular wildlife and fish. As we navigate the river, don’t be surprised if a bald eagle circles over your head, reddish kokanee salmon shimmers in the water,  or a wolf flashes across your path.

During our Kootenay River canoe trip, you'll also have plenty of opportunities to snap postcard-perfect pictures, enjoy fishing or take a refreshing dip in crystal clear water.

Today we start our paddling adventure. After breakfast, we’ll hop in a van and head to the starting point of our 4-day canoe trip. We start high in Kootenay National Park and boat through three different sections or reaches of the river. Each part of this canoe trip offers unique settings to test your mettle.

First, we propel our canoes through Park Reach, filled with easy rapids and swifts. This route, most of which runs through Kootenay National Park, provides an easy start, giving us plenty of opportunities to gaze on the awe-inspiring mountain scenery. The calm, rushing water crashes gently against the gravel shores, creating music to your ears.

After paddling 40 km (25 mi) downstream, we enter Canyon Reach, which is more challenging and tricky. This section of the river offers the most scenic landscapes. Enjoy a fun 50 km (31 mi) canoe ride through this watery wilderness and traverse one beautiful steep-walled canyon after another.

Next, a relaxing paddle through White River Reach awaits. This part of the Kootenay River takes us through awe-inspiring scenery in the westernmost ranges of the Canadian Rockies. Get an intimate insight into nature, where the river and towering mountains cohabit in perfect harmony.

During our passage on the Kootenay, we’ll also have a good chance of spotting wildlife. Keep your eyes peeled for bald eagles soaring in the sky and elusive wolves that occasionally appear on the shores. Discover unique land formations such as tufa deposits and hoodoos carved by the wind and water.

Over the nights, we’ll camp along the coast under the star-studded sky. Spend the evenings around the campfire reliving the experiences of the day. Home-cooked meals will warm you up from the inside out.
