Information

group kayaking in canada

After a meet-and-greet in Resolute, we’ll travel towards our starting point on Ellesmere Island. Ellesmere is the third largest island in Canada and translates from Inuktitut to “the Land of Muskox.” Multiple fjords alongside the towering mountains of the island have lent to its reputation as the most charming island in the Arctic Archipelago.

Guests are welcomed at Resolute Airport in Nunavut and transferred to the South Camp Inn. Located in one of the coldest inhabited places on Earth, Resolute is a small but culturally rich Arctic community. After check-in, dinner is served at the inn. This evening includes informal introductions and time to settle in before the expedition preparations begin.

Following breakfast at the inn, the day is dedicated to orientation and expedition preparation. Participants receive a detailed briefing on the upcoming itinerary, followed by a full gear check and packing session. Guides assist in organizing group equipment, including sleeping tents (shared between two), a kitchen tarp, cooking supplies, dry packs, and safety equipment. There is time to rest and prepare for the flight north. Dinner and the second overnight stay take place at South Camp Inn.

After breakfast, the group boards a charter flight from Resolute to Alexandra Fiord on Ellesmere Island, located on the Johan Peninsula in the high Arctic. This remote inlet along Buchanan Bay has been inhabited by ancient cultures and is now home to scientists and Arctic wildlife. Upon arrival, the team sets up base camp and prepares kayaking gear. Depending on the conditions, there may be time for an initial hike to explore the surrounding landscape and stretch the legs before the expedition begins in full.

For the next days, the group explores the dramatic landscapes of Alexandra Fiord and Buchanan Bay by sea kayak and on foot. Paddling routes include narrow inlets, island chains, and open stretches of Arctic water, with daily opportunities to spot wildlife such as seals, walruses, and polar bears.

Each day is flexible and weather-dependent, with options for day paddles, shoreline hikes, and short inland treks to nearby lookouts. The group may relocate camp several times during the expedition to access new areas. While paddling is the main focus, time is also set aside for photography, wildlife viewing, and enjoying the silence of the high Arctic wilderness.

Camping is expedition-style, with tents set up in scenic and remote locations. Guides handle safety, navigation, and daily planning, adjusting the route based on ice, wind, and wildlife conditions.

The group returns to the Alexandra Fiord airstrip and camps overnight in preparation for the flight back to Resolute.

Charter flight from Alexandra Fiord to Resolute. After landing, travelers return to South Camp Inn for dinner, showers, and one last night in the Arctic.

Guests transfer to the airport in Resolute for onward flights.

  • This trip is rated at 3 on the difficulty scale. This is a remote wilderness expedition suited for experienced paddlers, hikers, and campers. It’s best for those comfortable with physically demanding days, variable Arctic weather, and limited services. Not ideal for beginners or travelers seeking comfort-based travel.
  • Anyone with chronic injuries and recurring health issues should consult a physician before embarking on this trip.
  • A full recommended gear list will be shared after booking.
  • Weather and ice conditions in the High Arctic can delay flights and change the itinerary. Plan for possible delays of up to one week after the tour ends. We recommend flexible return plans and trip interruption insurance. An overnight stay in before Day 1 and/or after Day 18 may also be required at your own cost.
