Itinerary

Itinerary

Meet Joe ‘The Aurora Hunter.’ He was born and raised in the NWT and had a strong track record of leading visitors and tour groups around Yellowknife to view the Northern Lights and into the wilderness of Canada’s north. Aurora Hunting is a mobile tour, and you will move around from place to place, looking for the best locations to view the Aurora. Joe was taught about the Aurora by his grandfather. He will assess the current weather conditions and decide which direction to go for the best chances to see the Northern Lights, even on those cloudy nights.

Finding the Aurora is something Joe takes very seriously, and he will always try and find the Northern Lights for you.

These northern lights tour packages are based in Yellowknife, the capital city of the Northwest Territories in Canada. The aurora borealis viewing season gets going by mid-August when the Midnight Sun finally starts to set earlier in the evening, and the skies get darker. Late summer and fall are a great times of year to come as the temperatures are warmer, and the aurora displays can be spectacular. When winter arrives, and the nights are dark and long, it gets colder outside, but the northern lights are the star of the show in Yellowknife.

Every evening your guide will take you to various locations outside of Yellowknife to seek out the Aurora and the best viewing areas to see the Northern Lights in all their glory. During the day, you will be taken on the best city tour of Yellowknife, see a historic old town, learn about local Indigenous culture and history, and also have the option to take other day tours with your local guides. In the winter, you will also enjoy a 2 hour dogsled tour and even have the chance to drive the dog team if you want.  Your accommodations will be in the Explorer Hotel or Chateau Nova, close to downtown Yellowknife. Yellowknife is very walkable and has a good selection of shops, restaurants, and pubs nearby.

You can upgrade your package to include evening meals at terrific local restaurants, additional day tours and winter clothing rentals.  Please inquire for more information and premium package pricing.
