Polar Bears and Beluga Whales Summer Adventure in Churchill

| CA-LBE003

Encounter wild animals in their natural habitat!

Overview

Summer is a great time to visit Churchill, Manitoba, with around 60,000 Beluga Whales cruising in Hudson Bay and Polar Bears moving away from the melting sea ice. This 7-day adventure includes boat tours to see the whales, a tundra tour on an Arctic Crawler, and a cultural tour around the Churchill area.

Highlights

  • Polar Bears
  • Beluga Whales
  • Coastal Boat Tours
  • Hudson Bay
  • Churchill Town
  • Tundra Vehicle Tour
  • Heritage and Cultural Tour

During this 7-day adventure, a group of experienced guides will take you to the most beautiful places around Churchill, Manitoba, with an opportunity to see polar bears, beluga whales, arctic hares, arctic foxes, and other wild animals.

The boat captain will take you into Hudson Bay in the one-of-the-kind wildlife viewing vessel called 'Matonabee.' It will provide multiple opportunities for seeing beluga whales and polar bears. On this thrilling day trip, we'll explore one of the most remote polar bear-watching areas in the west part of Hudson Bay. Since many polar bears reside there during the summer, you'll have a unique opportunity to catch them in their 'summer residence.' During the warm season, polar bears usually swim, explore wildflowers and rocks, or sunbathe on the shore. If the weather (and bears) permits, we'll get off the boat to explore this area on foot.

Warm, shallow water along the coast is also a place for beluga whales to come to feed, mate and give birth. This boat tour will be focused on seeing the beautiful animals in their natural habitat. We'll get as close to animals as possible without disrupting their daily habits. At first, we will travel down the Churchill River leading into Hudson Bay, where they feed on arctic char, caplin, and brook trout. We'll also jump out of the boat to take a walking tour to the historic Prince of Wales fort. Aqua gliding and kayaking are available as an extra.

Next, a Tundra tour on the Arctic Crawler awaits us. Summer is a perfect time to admire the beautiful landscape to the fullest. The tour will be organized in a custom-made vehicle, allowing you to admire the wildlife from a safe distance. In the evenings, we'll watch the weather forecast to see if there's a chance to see the magnificent Northern Lights.

The Cultural and Heritage tour will take us to the most recognized places in Churchill and the surrounding area. We'll visit Cape Merry, have an outside tour of the Polar Bear Holding Facility, and see the famous plane wreckage "Miss Piggy."

Day 1: Arriving at Winnipeg

On the first day, we’ll check into the Winnipeg downtown hotel and have free time to explore the city on our own.

After a nutritious breakfast, we'll check out of Winnipeg's downtown hotel and get a group transfer (included) to the airport. We'll take a flight from Winnipeg to Churchill, Manitoba. Arriving at Churchill, we'll check into the lodge, where we'll spend the next four nights. After settling in, we'll take a Cultural and Heritage tour around Churchill and the surrounding area. We'll visit the historical sites, such as Cape Merry, and an outside tour of the Polar Bear Jail. Breakfast and one dinner on the night of your choice are included.

Wooden Lodge in Winnipeg Manitoba

On the third day, we’ll go on a Hudson Bay Coastal tour, expecting to see some polar bears in their natural habitat. The shores of Hudson Bay are a popular place for bears during the summer months – you can often see them sunbathing on the shore. If weather permits, we will get off the boat and take a walk through an area where polar bears often roam about. Besides polar bears, here you can find other wildlife, such as arctic foxes, arctic hares, and over 200 migrating bird species. Breakfast and to-go lunch included.

Polar Bear Chilling in Flower Field Manitoba

On the fourth day, after a delicious breakfast, we’ll head on to the Beluga Whale Watching Boat tour, where you’ll have a rare opportunity to encounter these majestic animals! The shallow waters of Hudson Bay are perfect for these animals to feed, mate and give birth to. The tour will follow down the Churchill River and into the Hudson Bay area, rich in arctic char, caplin, and brook trout – exactly the kind of species that beluga whales like to eat. Breakfast included.

Beluga Whales in Manitoba Canada
