How to survive in a Canadian forest with a compass

This survival course takes place in some of the most awe-inspiring wilderness in Canada, in the Southern Chilcotin Mountains. We’ll penetrate ancient forests and rolling grasslands, and trek past sun-washed peaks and switchbacks. From learning how to start a fire to building a shelter from the elements, you’ll learn the basic survival techniques and tricks you need to, not only survive, but thrive in the wilderness.

As your attitude can make it or break it in a critical situation, we’ll teach you how to respond to worst-case scenarios in the backcountry. After this course, you’ll know what it takes to have the right mindset to endure unpredictable Mother Nature on your own.

During this outdoor "ranger" course, you’ll get hands-on experience and improve your physical and mental abilities to cope with unexpected situations in the wild.

Our tour starts and ends at the Chilcotin Holiday Guest Ranch near Gold Bridge, BC. You can book an optional transfer from Vancouver to the ranch at an additional cost.

The outdoor survival training will take place close to a remote ranch in the wilderness. During this 4-day course, you’ll learn basic survival skills, such as:

  • Constructing shelters (for single or multiple persons) in all seasons, with or without tools
  • Finding water in diverse environments and making it safe to drink
  • 10 methods to start a fire, in various weather conditions
  • Finding and preparing wild edible plants
  • Building a highly visible signal fire
  • Trapping game for survival situations
  • Navigating with a map and a compass
  • Navigating using nature, including the sun, stars, moon, weather patterns, animal behavior, trees, and bodies of water

As survival is also about making the right decision at the right time, your guides will coach you on how to prioritize tasks to achieve the best possible outcome. Good preparation is the first step to successfully handling emergencies. With this in mind, you’ll also learn how to plan for survival situations as this ensures that important steps will be taken as quickly and efficiently as possible in case of an emergency.

If you’ve ever heard some remarkable wilderness survival stories, you might have noticed that psychological preparation plays a key role in overcoming sudden events. Mental endurance is as important as any of the other basic survival skills. During this outdoor course, you’ll also be provided with the essentials of survival psychology and hazard assessment.

Practicing your skills in the natural surroundings of the Chilcotin Mountains will give you an immediate, authentic experience. We'll use natural tools provided by nature itself. As we push deeper into the wilderness, you'll be taught how to overcome real challenges. After all, what better place to apply your skills than the untamed wilderness of Canada?

Once you’ve passed this survival school, you'll be well-equipped to deal with survival emergencies both quickly and efficiently. This course will get you through any survival situation with confidence and ease.

  • At this time of year, the weather is pleasant and sunny. As Chilcotin Ranch is located in a rain shadow - a dry region of land on the side of the mountain range - you can expect bright skies and a bug-free environment. However, it gets cooler in the mornings and evenings so do make sure to bring a nice warm jacket.
  • A full packing list will be provided upon booking.
  • Transfer from Vancouver to the Chilcotin Holiday Guest Ranch can be added at an additional cost of $350 CAD.
  • If you decide to travel to the Chilcotin Holiday Guest Ranch by yourself, full directions on how to reach the ranch will be provided upon booking.
  • This is a family-friendly tour. However, if you go alone, the minimum age is 19 years old.
