Information

man trekking labrador fjords in canada

The Hebron Fjord and its inland lake stretch for more than 70 kilometers, and its mountains have vertiginous walls that rise up to 800 meters above the sea. From the heights of the cliffs, Hebron's North Crest Trail crosses several extraordinary panoramic views - lakes, deltas, rivers, cascades, waterfalls, gorges, snow tongues, ancient glacial valley, and 360-degree peaks.

Under the sun, the colors come alive on the fjord and create beautiful color contrasts. Early in the morning, the limpid water of the fjord oscillates between turquoise and deep blue, while at the end of the day the angle of the sun on the vegetation at the foot of the cliffs exhibits different shades of green as the jagged ridges take some amber hues. Walking on the summit of Hebron Fjord is an unforgettable experience. Looking out onto the fjord from the huge cliffs high above is a view you will not soon forget.

The North Crest Trail is quite easy for trekkers and offers different circuit loops depending on your interest in landscapes, wildlife and Arctic flora. Throughout your trek, you will be accompanied by a professional, experienced guide, who will ensure that you experience the best of what the region has to offer in order to take home unforgettable memories. All you need is a small backpack for the day.

If you are in the good physical condition and want to make the most of the extraordinary beauty of the landscapes of the Golden Peninsula, then this trip is guaranteed to please you. A scenic floatplane flight over Labrador's largest inland fjord is included in the package.

Morning departure from Kuujjuaq to the lodge by Twin Otter (45 mins.)

Departure by floatplane to Hebron North Lake, which is the starting point for the trek. (1 h)

The landscapes unfolding before your eyes give you your first chills. Further along during your flight in the floatplane, the mountains begin to rise higher and higher, revealing increasingly imposing cliffs. Canyons and valleys appear in front of the plane. Suddenly you see the dizzying cliffs of the inner Hebron fjord rising towards the sky.

The floatplane lands on a mountain lake north of the Fjord which gives you access to the hiking circuit of the northern ridge of the interior Hebron fjord.

This is where your journey begins. Accompanied by your guide, you transport your equipment to the campsite. You have to trek about 1.5 km along the North Hebron Lake. With the help of your guide, you set up your fixed camp for the duration of your stay.

If time permits, you can explore around the camp to soak up that feeling of being in the Torngat Mountains of Labrador.

On the third day of your journey, you will start your walk toward the Peak of the Twin-Falls. This peak is easily visible from your campsite. As you walk, the landscapes around you become more and more barren. At the top of the peak, you will have a 360-degree view of the Torngat Mountains!

Waterfall Peak rises 940 meters / 3090 feet above the fjord. From this point, you will have a breathtaking view that makes the hike so satisfying. Walking on the east side of the slopes, you will cross long snow tongues.

This day takes you to the highest point of your stay in the Torngat Mountains.

On the fourth day of your trip, you leave your camp to trek toward the high peaks. The destination is the upper valley of the twin waterfalls.

This will be your first view of the Hebron Fjord from land. The landscape that stands before you is certainly one of the most beautiful places you have visited. You can sit close to the void and enjoy this unforgettable moment. At the bottom of the fjord, you see the waves on this turquoise water.

Having an extraordinary view of the rock wall on the other side of the fjord at a height of 915 meters / 3000 feet high, your guide leads you to The Perch. Very close to one of the waterfalls, you can lie down on your stomach on the edge of the cliff and gaze into the void below the cliff. This memorable and sensational experience for the bravest allows you to have a view above more than 650 meters / 2130 feet of void. You will admire the incredible beauty of this place.

Trek Between Hebron North Lake And The Inner Fjord

Today, you will begin the fifth day of your trip by traversing the walls of North Crest towards the East to discover the most striking spectacle of the trek.

This day is the longest day in distance, but what a panorama! You will be dazzled by the miraculous product of glacial activities that have taken place over the past millions of years. It’s time to take countless photos.

At the highest point, at a height of 800 meters / 2625 feet, you will be amazed. This is the viewpoint that covers the entire length of the Inner Hebron Fjord. Your guide leads you to the place where you can see the entire Inner Hebron Fjord with just one movement of your head. Between the cliffs on the horizon, you see the Hebron Salt Fjord pointing all the way to the Labrador Sea, a distance of 70 kilometers.

Clearly, the inner lake of the Hebron Fjord is one of the most steep and spectacular freshwater fjords in Labrador.

On this sixth day, you do not go to the heights, but you stay at the level of Hebron North Lake for a well-deserved rest. Your guide directs you to an area that offers you the best chance of seeing the incredible flora and fauna that call this enchanting place home.

Tundra caribou and black bears are on the list of species to observe and photograph. Other animals you may spot are the silver fox, arctic fox, arctic hare and lemming. Birds are also there like the loon, the rock ptarmigan, the peregrine falcon and many others.

On your route, you discover several types of flowers and plants that are unique to northern regions. Campion moss and dwarf fireweed are plants that grow in the Torngat Mountains.

In the early morning, you dismantle the camp and the protective equipment with the help of your guide. With all your equipment, you head towards the extraction point on North Hebron Lake.

On your way, you pass by the magnificent Hidden Falls. You have a few hours to venture around and soak up this fabulous region. Look for caribou antlers which will amaze you with their imposing size.

The floatplane will pick you up for the return to the George River. After take-off, your pilot takes you between the walls of the Hebron Fjord. It gives you a different perspective on the last few days you have experienced.

Next, you pass above the Merewether Crater, an unsolved enigma stretching 198 meters wide and 47 meters deep. You will admire the brilliant turquoise color of its water.

The floatplane will then bring you to a scenic location on the banks of the spectacular George River, where you will set up your tent for the night.  You will have access to a gazebo and wood stove to maximize your experience on your last night in the region.

In the morning, on your last day of the trip, the freighter canoes will come to pick you up and bring you back to the lodge where you will prepare for your return flight to Kuujjuaq, then to Montreal.
