Information

man trekking labrador fjords in canada

The Hebron Fjord and its inland lake stretch for more than 70 kilometers, and its mountains have vertiginous walls that rise up to 800 meters above the sea. From the heights of the cliffs, Hebron's North Crest Trail crosses several extraordinary panoramic views - lakes, deltas, rivers, cascades, waterfalls, gorges, snow tongues, ancient glacial valley, and 360-degree peaks.

Under the sun, the colors come alive on the fjord and create beautiful color contrasts. Early in the morning, the limpid water of the fjord oscillates between turquoise and deep blue, while at the end of the day the angle of the sun on the vegetation at the foot of the cliffs exhibits different shades of green as the jagged ridges take some amber hues. Walking on the summit of Hebron Fjord is an unforgettable experience. Looking out onto the fjord from the huge cliffs high above is a view you will not soon forget.

The North Crest Trail is quite easy for trekkers and offers different circuit loops depending on your interest in landscapes, wildlife and Arctic flora. Throughout your trek, you will be accompanied by a professional, experienced guide, who will ensure that you experience the best of what the region has to offer in order to take home unforgettable memories. All you need is a small backpack for the day.

If you are in the good physical condition and want to make the most of the extraordinary beauty of the landscapes of the Golden Peninsula, then this trip is guaranteed to please you. A scenic floatplane flight over Labrador's largest inland fjord is included in the package.

Today the floatplane will transport you to a mountain lake located less than 7 km from the largest inland fjord in Labrador – Hebron Fjord Lake. The flight is approximately one hour long.

The landscapes that pass beneath the floatplane will give you a first glimpse of what awaits you! Further, into the flight the mountains become steeper, canyons appear and suddenly the vertiginous cliffs of the fjord rise to the sky.

The floatplane will land on a mountain lake on the north side of the fjord that will allow you to access the North Crest Trail of Hebron Fjord Lake.

This is where your trek begins! In the company of your guide, you will begin your day’s circuit by packing all of the camping equipment along a beautiful little river that winds up the side of the mountain for a distance of three (3) kilometers to Stream Lake, where you will set up your fixed bivouac for the duration of your stay.

On the third day of your journey, you will start your walk towards the Peak of the Twin-Falls. This peak is easily visible from your bivouac site. As you walk, the landscapes around you become more and more barren. At the top of the peak, you will have a 360-degree view of the Torngat Mountains!

Waterfall Peak rises 940 meters / 3090 feet above the fjord. From this point, you will have a breathtaking view that makes the hike so satisfying. Walking on the east side of the slopes, you will cross long snow tongues.

On the fourth day, you will follow the cliff to the west to discover the ancient glacial valley of the fjord. From the top of the cliff, you will see the meandering traces of ancient riverbeds that were once fed by the melting glaciers more than 6000 years ago.

This location offers a beautiful view of the fjord where you will also see the highest waterfall in the province of Labrador right in front of you. The Hebron waterfall is twice the height of the Eiffel Tower, at over 720 meters high.

If you have brought your binoculars you will have the pleasure of perusing the magnificent color contrasts on the opposite wall of the valley. Keep your eye out for the small black dots that you might see at the bottom of the valley; tundra dwelling black bears can be seen throughout the summer season, and sometimes even caribou and wolves.

Trek Between Hebron North Lake And The Inner Fjord

Today you will start the fifth day of your journey where you will travel north of the North Crest to discover the most striking spectacle of the trek. This is the full-length view of the Hebron Fjord to the Labrador Sea, a distance of 70 kilometers.

Needless to say, you are going to be amazed! At the top of these magnificent landscapes, your guide will offer you a sensational experience where you can lie on your belly at the edge of the cliff and look into the void from 700 to 800 meters above … there is nothing more exhilarating than looking straight down into the depths of the fjord from such a height!

Hebron Fjord Lake is definitely one of Labrador’s most conspicuous and spectacular freshwater fjords.

It’s your last day on the Golden Peninsula. At mid-day, the floatplane will come to pick you up for the return flight to the lodge. Early in the morning you will dismantle the bivouac site and move to the drop-off location at Hebron North Lake. In route, you will pass the beautiful Hidden Falls, where you can take the opportunity to fill your canteen and refresh yourself.

Return to the lodge in the afternoon.

You will end the day with a good hot shower, and if you feel like it, a soak in the wood-fired cedar spa with a nice glass of wine or a cold beer in hand while taking in the breathtaking views of the famous George River.
